Finally, a concert announcement in 2009…!

It’s been a long dry spell for Enlightened Planet, there’s no question about it.

The last few months of 2008 went pretty well, with three particularly successful events.  You can check out our event archives if you like, and see that we hosted the Hoenig-Pilc Project in September, we worked together with the good folks at Prart Music Group to present the John Scofield and Joe Lovano Quartet in October, and, to close out the year, we were delighted to produce a special New Year’s Eve party with Ron Grant and Friends at the beautiful Sofitel Centara Grand Resort in Hua Hin.

There were high hopes for 2009.

It didn’t take long for the first setback, as all my overtures with sponsors couldn’t turn up a single baht to help present the Chick Corea John McLaughlin Five Peace Band.

Yes, I tried…  I really really tried.

As a music fan in Thailand, though, you’ve no doubt noticed the scarcity of top class international events of any kind.

There have been a few high points in the past year on the jazz front, but the overall scene has been depressed.  The Bangkok Jazz Festival took a hiatus, and this year’s Hua Hin Jazz Festival came and went without troubling lovers of real JAZZ at all.  We’ve had some help from Dr. Denny Euprasert at Rangsit University (who’s managed to bring in such varied artists as Chris Minh Doky and Benny Golson to play with his trio), and Dr. Sugree Charoensook at Mahidol University (which inaugurated the Thailand Jazz Conference in early 2009 with performances by quartets led by trumpeters Tiger Okoshi and Ron Miles, and which supported the World Saxophone Congress XV as well).

There’s also a new club, Niu’s on Silom Jazz Club & Wine Bar, which is beginning to make a name for itself with local jazz connoisseurs.  The club is gorgeous, comfortable, intimate (only about 70 seats maximum) and offers the best sightlines and the best acoustics of any serious music establishment in town.  Their stage is busy every night with the best jazz Bangkok has to offer, and they’ve also started to “up the ante” by actively pursuing international acts.  Owner Joachim Schulz is a huge fan of jazz, blues, and soul, which bodes well for the club, and he’s also brought in top chef Marco Cammarata to make the related Concerto Italian Restaurant into a true “dining destination”.

Which brings us to some VERY GOOD NEWS:

Enlightened Planet is proud to be associated with Niu’s on Silom Jazz Club & Wine Bar’s presentation, exclusive in Thailand on September 17 and 19, 2009, of the extraordinary Tim Garland’s Lighthouse Trio.

Tim Garland and Gwilym Simcock, the pianist in the Lighthouse Trio, are both “friends” of Enlightened Planet, having toured Southeast Asia with us in June 2006 as featured performers in Bill Bruford’s Earthworks.  This year’s return to Thailand promises some great NEW music, as the Lighthouse Trio has just released a double-CD set called Libra to great critical acclaim around the jazz world.

Make your plans now to join Tim, Gwilym, and percussionist Asaf Sirkis for a splendid evening of contemporary jazz in the beautiful surroundings of Niu’s on Silom Jazz Club & Wine Bar.

See you there!
