And now for something completely different…

After several stellar performances featuring the acoustic sounds of Tim Garland’s Lighthouse Trio at Niu’s on Silom in September, Enlightened Planet shifts gears and heads in an entirely different direction for October:  electric jazz fusion!

Enlightened Planet is proud to be associated with Prart Music Group’s presentation of the “Super Jazz Trio”, featuring Scott Henderson on guitar, Jeff Berlin on bass, and Dennis Chambers on drums, at 8:00pm on October 20th, 2009 at The Landmark Hotel Bangkok.

Scott Henderson claims to be a blues-rock guitar player.   His early fascination with monster rock guitarists like Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, and blues greats such as Albert King and Buddy Guy, tempered by the influence of jazz music, led him finally to the style of music he is most famous for playing and composing.  In his early professional years he played with Chick Corea’s Elektric Band, violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, and Weather Report’s Joe Zawinul, and then set out to create his own sound with bands like Tribal Tech and Vital Tech Tones. Finally, a concert announcement in 2009…!

It’s been a long dry spell for Enlightened Planet, there’s no question about it.

The last few months of 2008 went pretty well, with three particularly successful events.  You can check out our event archives if you like, and see that we hosted the Hoenig-Pilc Project in September, we worked together with the good folks at Prart Music Group to present the John Scofield and Joe Lovano Quartet in October, and, to close out the year, we were delighted to produce a special New Year’s Eve party with Ron Grant and Friends at the beautiful Sofitel Centara Grand Resort in Hua Hin.

There were high hopes for 2009. Read More »

Finding great jazz in Southeast Asia

A man walks into a bar on a Friday night.

And I don’t mean just any man, bar, or Friday night.

It’s Friday, September 5, 2008, and I’m going into Harry’s Bar on Boat Quay in Singapore to meet a former colleague for happy hour. It’s an after-work ritual I probably went through a hundred times in the eight years I lived on this island nation, roughly evenly split with visits to the aptly named Ice Cold Beer on Emerald Hill.

I settle onto a bar stool at a small table inside. I’m an “insider” today, forgoing the constant parade of people going by on the path outside for the air-conditioned smoke-free environment in the pub. My friend shows up almost immediately, and we order a pint of Kilkenny (me) and an Archipelago Samui (him) to start off the evening.

I glance around at the familiar surroundings a few times before it gradually dawns on me that there must be SOMETHING GOING ON. A few balloons scattered among the rafters, blue posters up on the walls, a standing sign kind of blocking the entrance way, and the waitress warning us that tonight we have to leave the bar by 8:00pm if we don’t have tickets to the jazz festival.

Enlightened Planet is proud to present the Ari Hoenig Quartet!

“Ari Hoenig… has extended the art of jazz drumming into the future. He’s done this via telepathic interaction with soloists, forging his own brand of swing and exerting an absolutely uncanny ability to mine molodicism from the kit.” – All About Jazz

“Ari Hoenig combines jaw-dropping intensity, phenomenal technique, and visionary perspective, making him a major force in jazz’s evolution through the 21st century.” – Minneapolis/St. Paul City Pages

“More than an hour of fever-dream, don’t-try-this-at-home jazz… fully loaded and filled with creative sparks… give Ari Hoenig’s Lines of Oppression a listen, pick your jaw up off the floor, and listen again.” – Ottawa Citizen

Ari Hoenig Quartet, featuring Gilad Hekselman, Orlando le Fleming, and Shai Maestro, in concert in Tokyo, Bangkok, and Singapore; additional artist workshops in Bangkok in conjunction with Silpakorn University! Please check our event page for more details.

    Benny Lackner Trio
    Southeast Asian Tour
    June 14 to 22, 2011

Enlightened Planet is delighted to present the Benny Lackner Trio!

“Lackner may be the first established pianist to come out of the Mehldau school… With a contemporary approach, he helps give the piano trio a much-needed facelift.” AllAboutJazz

"Lackner and his companions have hit upon an unclassifiable, uncontrived sound with an appeal that could reach beyond the jazz arena. ... they fashion music that's equal parts melodic jazz, indie rock and edgy downtown improv ... (and) knit far-flung sources into a seamless and innovative fabric." Downbeat

Benny Lackner Trio kicks off in Bangkok before moving to Phnom Penh, Kota Kinabalu, Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hong Kong. Check our event page for more details! This tour supported by the Berlin Senate Cultural Affairs Department.
